Sare Sham aae...

‘Sare Sham aae’ is a song that has been made in Hindi.The original tune is of a Bengali song ‘Meghe der Minare’ by a wonderful and famous singer Shubhamita Banarjee .
Nilangshu, my friend introduced me to her song .I fell in love with Shubhamita’s melodious voice and amazing expression.I am going to record more of her songs in Hindi as my effort to introduce non-Hindi tunes to a larger audience.
Bengali lyrics were quite sad and dark, but when I listened to the song, the tune sounded more of a romantic song than that of a melancholic one. I requested Sajeev Sarathi who is a proud writer of this song to keep it positive and he did an amazing job of choosing the words and a feel to it. I did not have to change a single word for any reason. Abhishek, another friend was my best critic; he translated the Bengali lyrics for me.(though we never use the actual translation when we make the song in Hindi). I always got his input..Shampak who very graciously made these tracks available to me and finally but very importantly Anil-ji who mixed the track for me did a beautiful job. Believe me I tried mixing and it did not come anywhere close to what it sounds at present.

Hello...Since I have not posted anything for a while here is something that Murli has put on his blog for my introduction to the Blog world.
‘DayaGhana’ is a Marathi song written by a very well known Marathi poet Sudhir Moghe, sung by Suresh Wadkar and music given by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
I have attempted this song with a ‘Bandish’ in Raag ‘Poorvi’ as a prelude followed by the original song.
My good friend Surendra Rajak and I started to work on this project long time back and we are still working on it in between our live shows and jobs. Hopefully some time soon he will put all of these songs on his site. Recording these Marathi songs is one of the fondest memories of mine.

This particular song is Pradip’s creation and I thank him for making me part of it. It was part of ‘Blogswara album 2’ and you might have heard it there before, but I wanted to post it for the people who have not heard it yet.
Beautiful light hearted tune that people will remember and can humm. A lot of times we find beauty in simplicity and this composition speaks of that. Meaningful words of Ajay have made it very sensual. William with his chords has filled up the atmosphere with magic and though last in the list, Bhavya has brought it to life with her poignant touch. I don’t know if it’s a quality or a flaw in me but if I like something, I have a habit of doing it for a long long time until I get tired of it. It applies to eating food, listening to music or singing a song.

At this particular time I am going through, ‘Shreya Ghoshal’ phase, so you have no escape but to listen to me trying out her songs. Here is a song from the movie ‘Jab we met’ that I enjoy.The best part of the song that I enjoyed singing is the ‘Harmony’,and I had a blast figuring out and singing it.It is rather challenging song since there is lot of processing of vocals that has been done in the original recording, though achieving same results is almost impossible, I have tried my best to get similar effect and feel to the song.

Hope all of you will be forgiving enough in case it’s not reaching your expectations.

This song is very close to my heart, as it’s from a Marathi movie ‘Ekati’ and it was based on a story called ‘Madhuchi aai’ written by my Grandmother, Mrs. Vasundhara Patwardhan, who is a very well known writer in Maharashtra. This award winning movie was made in 1969, and renowned movie/stage actors and actresses like Sulochna ,Indumati Paingankar and Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar were part of the cast. Music direction was done by Shri.Sudhir Phadke, who not only was well known in Marathi but also gave some beautiful songs to the Hindi film industry. ’Joyoti Kalash Chalake’ was one of his melodious compositions that was unforgettable.
I grew up with my Grandmother since the age of 10 months; needless to say, she was a Mother more than a Grandmother and she has been a tremendous Inspiration in my life. Because of her, I am who I am, a very strong woman who never feared obstacles, fought calamities and paved her own path in life.
For my non Marathi friends, I requested my Grandmother’s other Granddaughter, the very talented Ms.Rama Desai, reconstitute the meaning of the Marathi poem in her words. You will note that I did not use the word translation. The reason for this is that sometimes a translation can be accurate to a ‘T’ yet it loses the song’s meaning and feeling somewhere along the way. Rama has reconstituted the lyrical ideas for us in a very poetic way. I hope you will enjoy the song ‘Chal soduni haa, desh pakshini’.

Iqbal Bano, voice that was robust and rustic yet it had quality that made it very soothing to the ears….full of emotions and each note would touch your innermost feelings. I always felt as if there was no pretentiousness. What she had was present in front of you. As they say your voice is a face to your heart…it’s so true…it’s so true….

You know, sometimes I think I must have done something good in my past life that I meet such wonderful people now. These are great friends who do not want anything from me, but are happy in my company or even away from me. My well being, my prosperity and happiness is what they are interested in. Nothing more nothing less.
Here I am talking about such friends. This series of songs is something that I did for my friend Anju. She wanted me to do songs that I liked and suited my voice. Her aim was to record and listen to them with my 93 year old grandmother, who happens to be my inspiration and motivation.
We recorded these songs with Tabla played by our beloved Tabla nawaz Sri.Shankar Kuchekar (we affectionately call him Sir.), who made a tremendous effort to put it all together.
When we heard the songs we thought they sounded OK but were a little dry and empty. Well, here comes another friend to the rescue, Anil ji; who I have never met but connected with through music, even though we are thousands of miles and several languages apart. I sent him the tracks and in a day he sent me this amazing transformation of “Saaranga”

Listen to it and let me know. Please be kind as I have varied from the original tune,but then…I sang it with the feelings that I had singing and listening to this song…
The recipe of the song is simple "a little imperfection with feelings to feel,with the love that I got from my friends I made it all real”.

Once upon a time, and a long long time ago, there lived……….never mind, to get the story short, I remember Murali had sent me this Tammil song called ‘Sonnalum‘, heard it and fell in love with it. A year ago I sent it to Ali and he loved it as well. We were inspired to write Hindi lyrics to it, which we did and because of lack of good karaoke track we never finished the recording. Recently I requested Anil Bs ji to make a track and very graciously he made an amazing track for me.

Here is our version of Tammil :Sonnalum” called ‘Sun-na le’. Sun-na le is not a translation of Tammil song but a beautiful tune driven flow of thoughts in our voices. Pease keep your hearts and minds open to grasp the variations and style.
Again thank you Murali for introducing me to this song, thank you Ali for singing with me and Anil-ji for making such a beautiful track for us, without your track we would have never been able to record and present it to the people.

Ok.... after a long break here is a song called ‘Tanha lamho me’. ’ThumpiKinnaram’,was a song originally done in Malyalam, sung by Gayatri and Jesudas, music director Deepak Dev.
I fell in love with this song when I heard it; actually Pradip Somsundaran was the one responsible for it. I started thinking, what can I do to get this song in Hindi? I approached Ajay; and immediately taking no longer than five minutes Ajay had the first couple of lines written for me. Ajay, you have done an amazing job!
Jo is my partner in crime. I do not need to say anything about Jo, as almost all of you know him and his wonderful voice.Please listen to it on Jo’s blog.

BARASE BADARIYA

‘Barse Badariya’ is a product of Yahoo chat. It is hard to believe but yes it’s true. Singing day and night in the chat rooms, creating music rooms like ‘Sur mandir’ ,’Sa re ga ma’ , ‘Saaz aur Awaaz’ was daily activity for all of us ‘Yahooligans’. Many a times it was just waste of time but some times something productive came out of it. I met some wonderful creative people ,Murali was one of them, in our yahoo singing sessions we sung songs one after another all night long, from one song to another and through this raga to that …it was endless. Only people who have been on the chat will know the addiction.
Now that I don’t chat as much, I still am in touch with Murali , we still keep on making good music. Every few days or weeks I get a call form Murali, saying “Kaushiji, listen to this composition that I made.”
The tunes are ready, singing is done, now both of us have to make a point to complete them with music. Until then listen to this powerful composition just on a background of a note and nothing else…close your eyes and as you are listening to it try to gauge/predict endless possibilities of the full fledge bhajan.

ALI PERVEZ MAHEDI

It is my pleasure to introduce my friend Ali Pervez Mahedi, son of a renowned artist of Pakistan, the late Ustad Pervez Mahedi.
Ali was born in Lahore, Pakistan. He had his training in classical music from his Father and his Grandfather at a very tender age. When he was 19 years old he received ‘Qitab’ of ‘Sur Mani’ from ‘Prachin Kala Kendra’ in Chandigadh in the name of Pt.Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, an architect of modern Hindustani music.
Ali’s official performance was at the age of 16, and since then he has performed and toured around the world, India, Bangladesh, Scandinavia, Russia to name a few countries. Currently residing in Dallas Texas, Ali is still pursuing his first’ Love’, the love of music.
Ali is not just a singer, but also a composer and lyricist who has an amazing understanding of arrangement (though the arrangement in the album “Khayaal” is by Aslam Baloch who is also very accomplished musician) and plays various instruments. His album “Khayaal” is an example of his beautiful work.
What I admire about Ali is that he is not dependent on others to make music for him, he does not follow trends blindly; he has his own ideas, and he follows his passion. There is no compromise or attempt to produce something just to please the masses. ’Maula’ is another song, which you might find interesting.
I am sure just like me, others would crave for listening to Ali’s very “Desi” style of singing, perhaps a Bhajan or a Ghazal. Until then, for your listening pleasure, here is clip of “Waada” and “Hawaa”.

DARO DEEWAR PE-GHAZAL

Here is My first Ghazal on the blog…and it is possible only because of Anil-ji…When I mentioned to Anil-ji that I wanted to sing a ghazal and I was tired of doing film songs, he immediately asked me to send some ghazlas that I would have liked to do, and said ,”I will make a track for you, but it will take a little time since the original has been recorded with the best artists in the industry”,but within only a few days, when I received my track I was floored, I couldn’t believe how detailed and beautiful it was. I have to say, Anil-ji you are no less than the ‘best of the best’. You have done an amazing job!!!
‘Daro Deewar Pe’ is a beautiful ghazal by Hariharnan-ji (one of my idols) from Album Gulfam. Please enjoy it and if you have not heard the rest of the ghazals from this album, please do listen to them.

We hear the word ‘Remix’ quite often these days, there are good mixes as well as mediocre ones. Some people like them and some people cannot stand them as the beauty of the song gets lost in trying to put it to the western beat.
If you ask me, I feel that remixes or any songs for that matter can be pretty lame if they are done without putting any thought in to it, or made without using any sense of compatibility of the words, tune and the beat. What matters is the final product the concoction.
“Ye hai reshmi” is my effort of doing a remix. Kenz Desai who is a well-known music Composer, Producer and DJ based in N.C. USA. has produced it and is now released by Ziba Music.
Kenz and I started working together on several songs a couple of years back and I must say he is a wonderful person to work with, though I have not yet met him in person. I have experienced nothing but professionalism and promptness in working with him.
Kenz, I am glad we met and I thank you for giving me the opportunity of singing for you. Hope we will do more music together.
Soon I will put up a new link for another upcoming club mix ‘Tsunami’ also produced by Kenz.

BEHEKI SI ISS RAAT ME

Sanjay, I met through one of my net friends, she told me a lot about him, his composing singing etc. Once all of us even gathered together in a music room on Yahoo, but I guess time had not come, we listened to each other and left the room without thinking much about it…until recently I got a chance to chat with him and that’s when I realized how interesting of a person he was. In spite of being an IRS officer, his interest in Indian classical music and other forms of western music I found to be amazing. He himself is a wonderful guitar player, in the clip of his song ‘Beheki si iss raat me’ he has composed the music, played guitar as well as written the lyrics. It was through him I heard the unpublished version of ‘Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil me Khayal Aata hai’. Soon his album will be released through a leading recording company, until then here is a clip for you to enjoy.

‘Tere liye’ a live song performed in Detroit show by me and Ameet, presented by Mr. Narendra Sheth Founder member of ‘Geetmala’ foundation. Narendra-ji is a very well known personality in the area for his passion and dedication for music. He also has a radio show, which he has been doing for over 30 years, and also a live show every year with multimedia showcase. I was fortunate enough to be part of this particular performance in 2005. There were about 27 talented musicians from all over, not only U.S.A. but also Canada. His show is one of a kind. Every year it’s taken to a higher level. Even very few Bollywood shows are done on such a large scale.

This song was performed by me and my friends in Richmond for Bengali Association. Chirashree, Topobrata, Ajit, Pankaj and Rupa same team as of ‘Uda ja re kaga’, ‘Kali Ghata’ and ‘Ye Nayan’. I don’t want to sound so formal, but truly I am thankful to all of them that they worked so hard to make this program happen. This performance of mine is one of the most memorable ones. The sound was almost perfect for recording (specially considering the live performances do not record as well, or are not as well balanced) All the rehearsals were immensely enjoyable time spent together, each and every one was full of enthusiasm and ready to listen to the suggestions for improvement; the presence of the strong passion for music was a common factor. Most importantly this small band of five people achieved the desired/required effect that was needed for the songs with minimal help.

In spite of their professional careers as Doctors, Engineers, Moms and Dads they diligently kept working towards the goal and I think they achieved it with flying colors.

I met Pradip through one of my good friends. He said, “Kaushi-ji there is someone I want you to meet, and he is interested in you singing with him”, I said, “sure”. I did not think of it much but when I saw his website and his blog I was thoroughly impressed, not because he got his site looking very cool with the animation but because the material that he had on it. He literally had put hundreds of hours worth of work, rich with not just music but information and insight. His diligence shows through his work. Pradip is one of very few people that is as versatile as he is, latest example of this is his ‘tears in heaven’. I am very privileged to sing with this unassuming but talented singer.Legendary music director Salil-Da’s beautiful composition ‘Tasaveer teri’ is our effort together.

BAAHO ME CHALE AAO

Most of us know Lataji’s melodious numbers sung for the heroine in the movies who is shy, feeble, and waiting for the hero to approach her. In very few instances do you see the heroine in a song asking the hero to show his affection to her, she is the one who is saying, “the night is young, both of us are together then why worry? Let’s make the best of it!” A wonderful example of it is ‘Bahome Chale Aao’

This is one of those rare songs of Lataji that has been sung with playfulness and incredible sensuality without any overt expressions. Music of RDB and voice of Lataji has made it immortal. Sometimes a singer is branded for his/her certain type of singing until a revolutionary music director comes along, and shows a new side of the singer’s ability.

I think we give credit to the singer who has made these songs evergreen but equal credit goes to the music director, if not more.

(After recording the song, I was not satisfied as I felt I did not get the same feeling that I was looking for. I could not find the mistakes but just was not happy with it until I played the original song which was a bit slower and half a note down…
So…please excuse me if I could not convey the same feeling and emotions. It is very difficult to do that when have to rush through the song on a high pitch.)

Hello...Since I have not posted anything for a while here is something that Murli has put on his blog for my introduction to the Blog world.
‘DayaGhana’ is a Marathi song written by a very well known Marathi poet Sudhir Moghe, sung by Suresh Wadkar and music given by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
I have attempted this song with a ‘Bandish’ in Raag ‘Poorvi’ as a prelude followed by the original song.
My good friend Surendra Rajak and I started to work on this project long time back and we are still working on it in between our live shows and jobs. Hopefully some time soon he will put all of these songs on his site. Recording these Marathi songs is one the fondest memories of mine.

Shreya, is a name that comes to mind when we talk about ‘perfect singing’ in this generation of various singers. I think she is one of very few blessed singers with flawless voices. Her silken voice is malleable yet very steady; at such a young age she has achieved great sense of singing the song with emotions and maturity, her reaching the high notes does not sound shrill it’s all without any hesitation and/or efforts.
Like many other people all over the world I have been following her singing since ‘Sa re ga ma’ and have come across many beautiful songs. Here is one of them…..‘Chalo tumko…’
